Located in the north of Si phan don area, Don Khong is the largest one of the 4000 Islands. This island is also the capital of Khong district and is the logical jumping off point for trips to the rest of the islands. Khong island is 24 km long and 8 km wide, it has 99 mountain tops, 15 temples and French colonial buildings.
There are 19 villages on the island, many of which derive their livelihood from fishing. Speciality products of the island include palm leaf hats, palm sugar, and Lhao Khao Gum-a potent alcohol. Two of the island’s mountains – Phou Kew and Phou Kyo – each have sacred caves and offer a refreshing walk in the forest with clear views of the island.
Fantastic ways to explore the island are by bicycle or motorbike, following the paved ring road around.
